Midlake fans, take heart! The band is back with For the Sake of Bethel Woods, their first album since the ancient days of 2013. It’s one of their best albums yet. The group started working together again in 2019, with the majority of the album coming together during the lockdown(s) of 2020. It’s not a pandemic album per se—the band takes a lot of their musical inspiration from personal relationships (keyboardist/flutist Jesse Chandler’s father, drummer McKenzie Smith’s baby son)—but those familiar elements of uncertainty, the eternal search for hope, and finding beauty and transcendence despite the shadows will be relatable for any listener. Produced by acclaimed indie studio wiz John Congleton, For the Sake of Bethel Woods is lovely, moving, and unforgettable.
