Jerry Paper’s Free Time is the feel good weirdo pop album of the year. The songwriting is top-notch: light-hearted and affirming, there are more than a couple of “you do you” personal anthems on here. Garage rock spirit melds with computerized dance music and classic funk vibes. Flutes float angelically into the mix on “Just Say Play,” blissed out lounge melodies serve as the bed for the artist’s refrain of “Shaking Ass.” On Free Time, you never know what direction the music’s gonna take, but you know it’s gonna be a damn good one.
