África Brasil (CD)
Jorge Ben
Amoeba Review

Undoubtedly one of the best releases to come out of the Brazilian samba scene of the 1970’s, Jorge Ben’s Africa Brasil is pure ecstasy. The album swoons with a myriad of layered beats and percussion, jangly guitars and beautiful vocal arrangements. The album opens with the get on your feet and dance track “Ponta De Lance Africano (Umbabarauma)” and doesn’t let up with tracks “Meus Filhos, Meu Tesouro” and “Xica De Silva,” which carry just as much fire. On the track “Taj Mahal” you will find an instantly recognizable melody, this is because British rocker Rod Stewart lifted the melody for his song “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy.” Jorge Ben sued Rod Stewart for plagiarism and as a result Stewart agreed to donate the proceeds from the song to UNICEF. Africa Brasil is an absolutely stunning listen and an essential addition for any funk/soul collection.
