Ghetto Sci-Fi (CD)
Ras G And The Afrikan Space Program
Amoeba Review
James Elliott 05/14/2010
Ras G is a key figure in the exceedingly fertile instrumental hip-hop scene currently radiating out from Los Angeles. From DJ Nobody and Deadalus to Samiyam and Flying Lotus, the city has produced quite a few super-inventive beat makers. Ras G’s style is one of the deepest. Similar to Flying Lotus but less melodic, Ras G’s spaced-out dubs on Ghetto Sci-Fi bleed with that same gritty darkness heard on RZA’s early Wu-Tang productions. Thumping with a loose, organic feel, his tracks encompass gauzy dub, fierce boom bap and cosmic ambient drones. All of this is deftly held together by a classic hip-hop sense of mixing. A lot of producers reference Sun Ra’s space legacy but most fall short. Ghetto Sci-Fi is the nearest a beat oriented record has come to those heavenly dimensions. In a word: hypnotic.
