On Ghost of the Heart, Daniel Davies fuses synth soundtracks with heavy, atmospheric rock. His work as a film/TV composer, touring rocker, and collaborator on John Carpenter's Lost Themes albums means Davies has a unique and satisfying take on how to blend the world of the icy '80s synth with the gritty, ferocious rock 'n' roll riff. The tension is palpable on moody indie rocker "I Know Why," with its crescendoing chorus and ominously creeping melodies. The title track opens with those insistent retro synths before Davies' vocals kick in, detailing a tale of lies and lost love. An intriguing, cinematic album that should introduce Davies' singular songwriting to a larger audience.
