Giving The World Away (CD)
Hatchie
Amoeba Review
Hatchie's Giving The World Away melds post-punk, shoegaze, and dream pop in a way that feels fresh and unexpected. The Brisbane-based artist clearly knows her stuff, so effortlessly does she weave between genres. At times she glosses it up with a slight pop sheen, such as on "This Enchanted" or "Quicksand," with their undeniably catchy choruses. At other times—such as on the excellent title track—she keeps it moody, dark, and dreamy. It's a tight rope, to be sure, but Hatchie balances with aplomb. This is a wild situation but just consider it; think Tamaryn, Cocteau Twins, and Charli XCX all jamming out at some downtown rehearsal space at 3am. It'd probably sound a lot like Giving the World Away.
