GIZMO (CD)
Tanukichan
Amoeba Review
Tanukichan has to be one of the most interesting artists working in indie music today. The Bay Area artist's second album, Gizmo, is named after the dog she adopted during the pandemic and was inspired by the idea of escape. It's a dualistic concept: Tanukichan sings of escape from constraining circumstances and unhealthy coping devices...as well as searching for escape from one's self and one's problems. Together with collaborator Chaz Bear of Toro y Moi, Tanukichan has created a compelling mix of dream pop, grunge, and college rock, with lyrics inspired by the optimism of '90s alt-rock and pop. The effect is interesting—the lyrics address the artist's sadness and helplessness while adding a layer of hope and positivity. Which makes Gizmo an ideal listen for our sometimes turbulent times.
