Happy Hour (CD)
Hollie Cook
Amoeba Review
Spoiler alert: upbeat as the rhythms may be, dreamy as the gauzy vocals can get, Hollie Cook’s Happy Hour isn’t always the carefree, high-livin’ destination it’s name conveys. The title track straddles the line between sophisticated, urbane ‘80s tropicalia and lovelorn balladry with a finesse that’ll keep you hitting rewind on this ultimately sad banger. Later on, “Full Moon Baby” gets cosmic with trance-y synths, haunting vocals, and dubbed out melodies rich with yearning and desire. “Kush Kween” takes the tone of the album from emotional winter to a more celebratory summer with its irresistible stoner chorus. You’ll definitely want another round for this Happy Hour.
