Heavy Light (LP)
U.S. Girls
Amoeba Review
U.S. Girls mine the past on their latest, the excellent and intriguing Heavy Light. Band mastermind Meg Remy has pulled in a cast of almost twenty session musicians to accompany her on the journey, recording new versions of earlier compositions and exploring her childhood through spoken word. Much of U.S. Girls’ output has had a shimmering, languorous quality — which is intact here on Heavy Light — but with an urgency bolstered by Remy and the band’s reflections on memory and days gone by, as well as obliquely socio-political lyrical jabs. The concept is strong throughout and the execution is as moving as fans would expect. Heavy Light is another win for the ever-talented Ms. Remy.
