Hideous Bastard (LP)
Oliver Sim
Amoeba Review
Hideous Bastard is the debut album from Oliver Sim, songwriter, bass player, and vocalist of The xx. Sim is definitely doing his own thing here, creating thoughtful, downbeat indie with elements of electronic and post-punk. Fans of The xx will find familiar flourishes though; produced by bandmate Jamie xx, the tracks feature gauzy synths, sweeping washes of sounds, and subtly haunting melodies. Bronski Beat’s Jimmy Somerville appears on opener “Hideous,” setting the stage for this quietly powerful and deeply moving album.
