The Afghan Whigs are back with How Do You Burn?, an album that gets under your skin in the way all the best rock ’n’ roll records do. And it certainly is one of their best; the tracks are tightly-constructed and carry with them a gravitas and a dark allure that makes them feel like long-lost classics of the genre. Cosmic, fuzzed out “The Getaway” makes fantastic use of a keening string section that brings an epic, cinematic scope to the proceedings. “A Line of Shots” is psychedelic and hypnotic, with a triumphant, transcendent chorus. “I’ll Make You See God” is an urgent stomper with a roiling power that feels ready to explode at any time. A feverish, intense, thoroughly enjoyable listening experience.
