I Am Not There Anymore (LP)
The Clientele
Amoeba Review
From across the hazy, dimly lit landscape of time comes another gauzy, '60s-influenced gem from The Clientele. I Am Not There Anymore digs more firmly into the sense of temporality and mystery the band's earlier works evoked: singer-guitarist Alasdair MacLean says the songs are about “the memory of childhood but at the same time the impossibility of truly remembering childhood… or even knowing who or what you are.” A liminal space is the perfect place to experiment, which is what The Clientele do on this album, bringing elements of jazz, electronic, and contemporary classical into their usual indie sphere. I Am Not There Anymore hits all the right notes for fans of The Clientele while also stepping into uncharted territory for the band. An interesting and affecting album that reveals more and more with every spin.
