I Be Trying (CD)
Cedric Burnside
Amoeba Review
I Be Trying, the new album from blues artist Cedric Burnside, revels in the North Mississippi Hill Country blues tradition, with its immediate similarities to the “desert blues” guitar rhythms from West Africa. “Step In” is a searing blues-rock track while “Pretty Flowers” is a funkier mid-tempo number. “The World Can Be Cold” is appropriately sparse and soulful, showing off Burnside’s affecting vocals that are somehow both smooth and gritty at the time. Burnside’s style is the perfect blend of downhome, earnest sounds mixed with true artistry.
