In Heaven (LP)
Strand Of Oaks
Amoeba Review
In Heaven is a fitting name for Strand Of Oaks’ latest. Recorded in the middle of the pandemic, after a cross-country move and back-to-back experiences with loss, a pervasive melancholy ornaments these beautifully-constructed songs, but it’s a sense of transcendence that buoys them. Each song is an experience all its own, deeply emotional and poignant, and strung together these tracks make for an extraordinary slow burn. Showalter sounds at his rawest and most powerful here. He’s got a talented crew behind him as well, with excellent work from producer (and drummer) Kevin Ratterman, Carl Broemel (My Morning Jacket) on guitar, James Iha (The Smashing Pumpkins) on vocals/guitar on the track “Easter,” Bo Koster (MMJ, Roger Waters) on keyboards, Cedric LeMoyne (Alanis Morrissette, Remy Zero) on bass, and Scott Moore on violin. A real stunner of an album.
