Few CD releases have ever created more of a fuss. In the early 1960s, Cale and Conrad called this ensemble the Dream Syndicate, and they pretty much invented loud, raw, ecstatic New York minimalism; Cale dragged it into the Velvets; Conrad passed it along to Rhys Chatham who infected Sonic Youth, and from there it entered the rock mainstream. However, when the group disbanded, Young seized the group’s archive of recordings, and claimed to be their sole author. This one came out despite Young, and it’s an epic, soaring revelation. There’s no My Bloody Valentine without Cale and Conrad.
