Steve Earle & The Dukes
Amoeba Review
Steve Earle's new album with the Dukes is a reverent tribute to his late son, Justin Townes Earle. Father and son famously shared the demon of addiction, and Earle Sr.'s gravelly delivery of his son's lyrics - for example, from "Turn Out My Lights" from 2008's The Good Life - is emotional for fans of either or both artists. "Harlem River Blues," from the 2011 album of the same name, is unsurprisingly less rollickin' and a lot more gritty. These are bittersweet covers arranged with more of a classic country/bluegrass touch than the originals. The set closes out with Earle Sr.'s ode to J.T., "Last Words," a sparse, acoustic ballad with subtle strings hovering in the background.
