Jerry Jeff (CD)
Steve Earle & The Dukes
Amoeba Review
Country legend Steve Earle brings his talents in tribute to another country icon on his latest: Jerry Jeff. Together with The Dukes, Earle takes on classic Jerry Jeff Walker tracks like “Mr. Bojangles,” “Gettin’ By,” and eight other essentials, bringing a nuanced touch, a lot of heart, and a down-home charm to the proceedings. The songwriting shines, and with Steve Earle and the Dukes interpreting the tracks, it’s interesting to hear these numbers in an affectionate, new light. This is the third and final installment in Earle’s series of tributes to his “first-hand teachers,” artists like Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt who inspired and educated the man who’s now a legend himself. It’s a must-hear.
