Lamentations [Pearlescent Bronze Vinyl] (LP)
William Basinski
Amoeba Review
The theme of Lamentations seems especially suited to our current climate, most obviously in the track title, "Please, This Shit Has Got to Stop." The other titles on William Basinksi's elegantly mournful new album include literary and Biblical references, adding further depth to these reconstructed tape loops and slowly swirling ambient pieces. The aforementioned track begins with vinyl static and distant, operatic vocals; "Paradise Lost" is a short, warped-sounding warning and "Punch and Judy" is a murky dirge. The avant-garde composer continues to make melancholy music that is anything but dreary.
