Lester Young’s failing health in the 50s resulted in a decade of uneven output, but this 1952 session is easily one of the highlights. Young is teamed with the Oscar Petersen trio, the pianist backed by guitarist Barney Kessel, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer J.C. Heard. The original 12 tracks (the reissue includes “(It Takes) Two to Tango”—featuring his only recorded vocal take -- and a pointless false start) balance wonderfully between bop-flavored swing (“Ad Lib Blues,” “Just You, Just Me,” “Tea for Two”), mid-tempo blues (“I Can’t Give You Anything But Love,” “(Back Home Again In) Indiana,” “Almost Like Being In Love”), and heart-crushing ballads (“I Can’t Get Started,” “Star Dust,” “These Foolish Things”). Young shows his dexterity throughout, shadowing Petersen and the rhythm section with ease when necessary, adding cool elegance to the blues, and floating above the ballads as though un-tethered from the natural laws of physics, let alone music. Young was the epitome of cool, and pairing him with the earthy Petersen showed that, despite their radically different styles, both were still just playing the blues. Kessel’s guitar adds texture to that small-combo feel, as well as the occasional brief solo for contrast, and the veterans providing rhythm are so rock-solid you forget they’re there. But this is Young’s show from the get-go, and offers proof that his genius was still intact even if his health was not.
