Little Oblivions [Yellow Vinyl] (LP)
Julien Baker
Amoeba Review
Julien Baker changed things up for Little Oblivions, her third studio album, adding full band arrangements (mostly performed by her) to her delicate indie folk songs. Fans may have worried about this, but it works consistently well here and adds new layers to her sound, new poignancy to her raw, emotional vocals. "Faith Healer" is beautiful, offering both melancholy and driving energy fully fleshed out with drums and bass, as well as reverb-drenched guitar. Tracks like "Favor," featuring Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus on vocals, are still heartbreaking and gentle but augmented with piano, strings and subtle percussion.
