Live At Hammersmith Odeon (CD)
Black Sabbath
Amoeba Review
Jeff Hunt 06/11/2010
The folks at Rhino Records couldn’t get it wrong if they tried, and Black Sabbath’s Live at Hammersmith Odeon is another outstanding release. It fills in a crucial gap in the Sabbath discography by finally providing a high-quality concert recording from the original Ronnie James Dio era. The gigs took place on December 31, 1981 and January 2, 1982, during the tour for the Mob Rules LP, and the band is in fine form. The material is split between Dio-era and Ozzy-era tracks, and while it’s great to hear Dio interpret classics like “Iron Man,” “Paranoid,” and “War Pigs,” he’s really in his element with the songs he co-wrote, including “Neon Knights” and “Children of the Sea.”
