Jacob Lusk was born and raised in Compton, and you don’t need to listen to his band Gabriels’ album Angels and Queens for long to know that he learned how to sing in church. Lusk and producer/keyboardist Ryan Hope and composer/violinist Ari Balouzian come at their audience from every angle: They can spin you around with a lighthearted groove, break your heart with a poignant character study, and take you to church on a gospel rave-up. At the center is Lusk’s virtuosic voice, an instrument so powerful The Guardian called him ”nothing short of incredible” in a five-star review that asked “Could this be the album of the year?” They’ve made fans out of Elton John and David Byrne, and KCRW called them the Breakthrough Artist of 2021.
