Loss Of Life [Blue Jay Opaque Vinyl] (LP)
MGMT
Amoeba Review
Seventeen years on from their now legendary, hands-in-the-air indie dance release Oracular Spectacular, MGMT are turning away from the dancefloor and looking inward. The title of their new album — Loss of Life — is probably a good indicator of the band's thematic evolution but this being MGMT, there's no doom and gloom, just electrifying, sometimes left-of-center songs about the challenges of growing up, falling in love, and living life. "Dancing in Babylon" features Christine and the Queens; the song has Fleetwood Mac meets glam rock in outer space vibes. It's slightly woozy and weird, just like the experience of falling head over heels. "Bubblegum Dog" is MGMT at their gleefully oddest, cranking up the cosmic pop, glam rock, and weirdo pop to maximum volume. Loss of Life finds MGMT getting serious, getting vulnerable, and creating some of the most intriguing music of their career.
