Love Is An Art (CD)
Vanessa Carlton
Amoeba Review
Vanessa Carlton's development as a singer/songwriter has been interesting to follow, from her early pop songcraft to these more atmospheric compositions with introspective and wry lyrics. The title track of her new album is a spacey ballad combining her characteristic piano with electronic swirls; "I Can't Stay The Same" leans into those electronic sounds with synths and booming drums. "Future Pain" builds into a joyful instrumental outro after its jaded verses about dating, but the strongest track here might be "Salesman," an intriguingly moody number with distinctive, grooving basslines and a sped-up chorus.
