Mahal [Silver Vinyl] (LP)
Toro y Moi
Amoeba Review
Toro Y Moi gets experimental on the eclectic, energetic Mahal. Artist and producer Chaz Bear was one of the progenitors of chillwave and that influence is still felt here, although it’s more of an accent to the psych and funk melodies that make up the album’s main course. There’s still plenty of woozy, dreamy grooves (“Magazine”) but there’s also a more playful, upbeat vibe (“Postman”) that keeps the album dancing into unexpected territory. Entrancing and intriguing in equal measure, this is an exciting new direction for the talented Toro y Moi.
