Mainstream (CD)
Lloyd Cole & The Commotions
Amoeba Review
Tiffany Anders 08/25/2010
Lloyd Cole And The Commotions released their third (and final as a band) album in 1987. Mainstream follows the unique songwriting style of their previous releases, including name-checking pop culture figures on tracks like “Sean Penn Blues,” and taking on different personas to make for varied points of view. Musically the album sounds a bit more slick than their stunning debut Rattlesnakes, but as on their debut, the guitar work here is wonderfully melodic and captivating. While this album doesn’t have the same flow that their debut had, there are several standout tracks, including “29,” “Big Snake,” and the title track, “Mainstream.” Fans of the group’s debut will be equally pleased with this release.
