Mary's Voice (LP)
The Music Tapes
Amoeba Review
The Music Tapes' third full-length album, Mary's Voice, is the warmest and most accessible invitation yet into Julian Koster's world. Koster (Neutral Milk Hotel, Olivia Tremor Control, Elephant 6) and long-time creative collaborator Robbie Cucchiaro have pushed the boundaries of what audiences have come to expect from an "indie rock" band with their live performances. Mary's Voice is part one of a planned two-part album and was recorded using machines of both past (early 1900s, '30s, '40s, '60s) and present to achieve a timeless sound.
