Memento Mori (CD)
Depeche Mode
Amoeba Review
Depeche Mode pushes their legendary sound into new territory on their new album, Memento Mori. It's the band's first album since the sudden death of founding member Andy Fletcher, and Memento Mori finds the artists grappling with loss, mortality, and ultimately catharsis. Lead single "Ghosts Again" is orchestral and cinematic, the melodies appropriately grand for the album wrestling with the inevitable conclusion of all our lives, the lyrics possessing a tenderness that adds to the dreamy nature of the song. Meanwhile "My Cosmos Is Mine" is bristling and brooding, with glitching synths and moody washes of sound. Depeche Mode sounds as vital as ever on the thoughtful, beautiful, and often profound Memento Mori.
