Mid Air (CD)
Romy
Amoeba Review
Mid Air is the blissful solo debut from the xx's Romy. Stylistically, the songs nod to late '90s and early '00s trance and house, the hands-in-the-air euphoric dancefloor fillers as ideal for losing yourself to the beat as to dancing your pain away. And there's certainly an undercurrent of melancholy to these tracks, just as there's also a sense of reassurance and revitalization. "Loveher" is tender and intimate, the rhythm simulating a heartbeat as Romy's quiet vocals build to one of the most romantic choruses in modern dance music. "The Sea" is a Balearic tale of love found and lost on holiday. "Strong" is an anthem for the struggling and heartbroken. Mid Air is a dream of an album that you'll play again and again.
