Sunflower Bean's Mortal Primetime is ridiculously good. Julia Cumming's vocals are entrancing, conjuring up the full-voiced, fantasy-loving divas of '80s rock 'n' roll. The juxtaposition of her honeyed, swooning tones and the band's blend of psych, indie, post-punk, and (yes) Heart-esque hard rock is both artistically imaginative and emotionally impactful. These songs will get you in the gut with their honesty, vulnerability, and beauty. It may still be early in the year, but this record's a strong contender for a spot on year end "best of" lists.
