Emita Ox (CD)
Hello Mary
NYC trio Hello Mary return with an alt-rock opus that takes every chance and MORE. Soothing vocal harmonies intertwined with complex rhythms, wrapped in a heavy, fuzzed-out bass would just start to describe what's happening on Emita Ox . Just when you think you've locked in to the vibe of a song, they spin it on its heel and completely change direction and tone, just to bring you back and make you wonder what just happened. All of that is brought together by an up-close, in-your-face production that makes you feel like you're right in the room with them.

Glossolalia (CD)
Dale Crover
Dale Crover, the longtime drum basher for metal icons The Melvins, is raising his artistic sails and flexing his creativity on his latest solo album, Glossolalia . Normally the hardest-hitting drummer in rock since Bonham, Crover downshifts and has crafted a mellower, free-spirited indie rock album. Joining him on this effort are guests such as Ty Segall, Soundgarden's Kim Thayil, and the legendary Tom Waits on the title track.

Performance (CD)
TR/ST
This is TR/ST at the act's darkest, danciest, very best. The songs on Performance are emotionally nuanced and cinematic, with lyrics about a relationship that's DOA, lingering lust, and a longing for doomed, illusory love. The atmosphere is brooding and beautiful, with moments of transcendence occasionally breaking through the storm clouds. Set against the noir landscape of nighttime Los Angeles, Performance feels bigger than life yet deeply relatable. Exquisite, devastating, and enchanting.

But I'll Wait For You (CD)
Local Natives
Local Natives follow up 2023's Time Will Wait For No One with this new companion album, But I'll Wait For You . The last album before the departure of co-lead vocalist and founding member Kelcey Ayer, it offers characteristically poignant, melodic tracks like "Alpharetta." "April" builds on that vibe with a little psych-funk and some slinky dancefloor grooves. "Neon Memory" and "Camera Shy" stand out for their livelier beats, interesting melodies, and gentle dynamics.

Good Together (CD)
Lake Street Dive
The genre-crossing band Lake Street Dive has returned with their eighth studio album, Good Together . The album is rich with '70s rock/pop sounds, such as on the title track, which could be the theme song for an old TV show. "Get Around" is fun and funky, and "Seats At The Bar" throws in a little samba-inflected disco. "Party On The Roof" is a highlight with its satisfying groove and catchy chorus. This is a light and breezy set, helmed by Rachael Price's strong, melodious vocals.

Pensive Pop (CD)
Amythyst Kiah
"Southern Gothic" artist Amythyst Kiah's Pensive Pop EP is a true gem. Featuring four covers delivered with rich, direct vocals and unique arrangements, it kicks off with a wonderful version of Tori Amos's "Sugar." The dark and delicate original becomes an enjoyably rockin' track that peaks with layers of guitar in the bridge. Up next are unexpectedly soulful and melancholy covers of Green Day's "Hitchin' a Ride" and Katy Perry's "Chained To The Rhythm." At the close, Joy Division's classic "Love Will Tear Us Apart" is a powerful acoustic number that feels somehow uplifting.

Rite Here Rite Now [OST] (CD)
Ghost
Rite Here Rite Now is the soundtrack to Ghost's concert film recorded at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, CA at the end of their 2023 Re-Imperatour . The soundtrack eschews the film's narrative moments from the band's web series Chapters, focusing on the riveting live music ramped up by the roar of the crowd. The sound is excellent on tracks like the epic, explosive "Kaisarion" and the blistering "Rats." While most of the music hails from Impera , there are also songs from Meliora and Prequelle , Seven Inches of Satanic Panic , and more. It's a real treat for fans even if they've experienced the band's energetic shows before.

The Moon Is In The Wrong Place (CD)
Shannon & The Clams
The Moon Is in the Wrong Place isn't your "typical" Shannon & the Clams album. The band's lush, throwback style informs these songs but instead of full-throttle, technicolor rockers, the album is a thoughtful, deeply moving chronicle of grief and loss. The groove comes out in places, in others, stillness takes center stage. Written after the death of Shannon Shaw's fiancé, the album is beautiful, dreamlike, and affecting.

Statik (LP)
Actress
With Statik , Actress continues to push electronic music forward. Minimalist and moody, the album builds on the bones of the musique concrète movement in deriving electronic sounds from their purest, most simple form...then adding sound textures and synth washes to create a mood that's haunting and almost disconcertingly beautiful.

The Underworld Awaits Us All (CD)
Nile
The Underworld Awaits Us All delivers more seething, bristling brutality from Nile. The band fuses fury and ferocity with the lore of ancient Egypt to create an album that's fascinating, technically brilliant, and ultra intense. This album is another imaginative and starkly terrifying success from the death metal legends.

Grim Iconic... (Sadistic Mantra) [Clear Vinyl] (LP)
J.R.C.G.
The second studio album by J.R.C.G. (Justin R. Cruz Gallego) is a heady brew of experimental noise-rock, punctuated by his Latin music and punk influences. "Dogear" is an excellent example of this with its Latin percussion set against distorted, shouted verses and droning guitars. "Liv" is an intriguing track with a mesmerizing synth line that segues into a barrage of various electronic sounds and vibrant global rhythms. "Cholla Beat" leans unexpectantly more toward grunge, giving the album a solidly eclectic feel.

Where We've Been, Where We Go From Here (LP)
Friko
Chicago indie rock band Friko makes a strong album debut with Where We've Been, Where We Go From Here . Opening track "Where We've Been" first calls to mind a melodic band like Travis before edging more toward early Radiohead, while "Crashing Through" ups the latter influence with warped distortion and crashing guitars. Singer/guitarist Niko Kapetan's impressive vocals are both powerful and vulnerable, especially on "Crimson To Chrome" where he wails and lets loose his vibrato. This is a band to watch.

Strong songwriting is evidenced throughout this thoughtful set.

Mantras (CD)
Katie Pruitt
The second studio album by Nashville singer/songwriter Katie Pruitt deals in self-discovery, escape from a religious upbringing, and personal validation. "All My Friends" is a strong opener with a catchy chorus, followed by the affecting "White Lies, White Jesus and You," whose gentle intro bursts into a driving song with a powerful chorus. Shrewd, relatable lyrics abound here, delivered in Pruitt's straightforward, pretty vocals. The ballad "Blood Related" offers poignant family drama and "Worst Case Scenario" tackles facing one's fears: "What if I gave up control? Instead of getting caught up in these hypotheticals?"

His sensitive vocals are matched by moody basslines and gently building arrangements on the excellent first two tracks, "Runaway" and "One You Love." Muq segues into accessible folk-pop later with songs like "Crying, Laughing, Loving, Lying" and "Hello Sunshine." "Dark Door" is a pretty ballad highlighted by a soulful vocal performance.
