Mutator [Red Vinyl] (LP)
Alan Vega
Amoeba Review
A new series of archival releases from the vault of the late Alan Vega launches with Mutator, which features tracks written in the mid ‘90s with his wife/collaborator Liz Lamere that were mixed and produced by Lamere and The Vacant Lots’ Jared Artaud. Vega’s talent for experimentation is on display here, along with his interest in hip hop and industrial sounds. “Fist” is an absorbing, dark synth track with stuttering beats and deep-voiced incantations; “Nike Soldier” is pulsing and eerie while “Filthy” swirls cinematically with spoken-word vocals repeating the title like a mantra. This is the enigmatic soundtrack to a gritty cityscape.
