My Light, My Destroyer (CD)
Cassandra Jenkins
Amoeba Review
Cassandra Jenkins' My Light, My Destroyer is a wonder. The melodies tap into some deeper strain of feeling than what's offered up in less thoughtful fare: these songs will get you in the gut with their relatable, ultra-specific heartbreak. "Delphinium Blue" is a soft, searing ballad, tailor-made for anyone who has punched the clock and smiled at customers while floating in the hazy netherworlds of heartbreak. "Petco" has a classic college rock sound, the soundtrack to an identity crisis in the wake of loss and loneliness. "Only One" is lush and yearning, modern sophistipop that channels '80s style quiet storm. My Light, My Destroyer is one of the year's best, a dazzling showcase for Jenkins' singular storytelling.
