Dan Deacon
Amoeba Review
07/24/2020
If you think you know Dan Deacon, think again. Mystic Familiar is a frenzied, jubilant, ultra imaginative genre-hopping album that showcases the Baltimore musician at his most transcendent and inspired. Album opener “Become a Mountain” sets the tone with intriguingly vulnerable lyrics laid out over a piano melody that seems to alternate between Philip Glass vibes and frenetic fairground energy. The whole listening experience seems to be infused with the joy and wonder of being alive, without turning away from the darker, needier, stranger moments of human existence. Mystic Familiar will get listeners that little bit closer to heaven on earth.
