Natural Disaster [Dreamsicle Vinyl] (LP)
Bethany Cosentino
Amoeba Review
On her debut solo album, Bethany Cosentino moves further from the scuzzed out beach garage of Best Coast, delivering upbeat indie pop that still has an edge. As you can imagine from its title, climate catastrophes and societal turmoil are an ever present part of the mix on Natural Disaster; as in our everyday lives, they're an uneasy part of the fabric of our daily lives, with all their personal catastrophes and turmoil. In her lyrics Cosentino weaves together heartbreak, uncertainty, and ever-humming environmental anxiety. In her songwriting, it's all yearning guitar, tender choruses, and sunshiney melodies. It's a potent blend, written with compassion, bigheartedness, and a genuine love for life. These songs might hit you in the gut, but they'll also deliver a warm, enveloping hug.
