New Long Leg (CD)
Dry Cleaning
Amoeba Review
British band Dry Cleaning has been garnering well-deserved attention for their artsy, angular rock songs with dry-humored spoken vocals. Their debut full-length, New Long Leg, features highlights like "Scratchcard Lanyard" with its dance-y rhythm and lines like "It'll be okay, I just need to be weird and hide for a bit and eat an old sandwich from my bag." Vocalist Florence Shaw's lyrics, which include overheard scraps of conversation, have a disjointed, stream-of-consciousness air that she intones with dramatic pauses like a poet, especially on the post-punk track, "Strong Feelings": "I’ve been thinking about eating that hot dog for hours" "That seems like a lot of garlic." Her monotone delivery on "Unsmart Lady" seems like a deliberate contrast to the raucous guitar sound. It's always exciting to hear a band that doesn't lend itself to obvious comparisons, especially when it sounds this good.
