Nice Ass (LP)
Free Kitten
Amoeba Review
James Elliott 05/14/2010
Free Kitten is the brainchild of Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon and Pussy Galore’s Julie Cafritz. Making things even more tantalizing, Boredoms drummer Yoshimi and Pavement’s Mark Ibold round out the lineup for 1995’s debut full-length, Nice Ass. Essentially merging the improvisational noise from both Sonic Youth and Boredoms with Gordon’s unique take on insightful indie cool, the record is a witty and inventive (if slightly dated) take on the state of mid ‘90s indie rock. Brimming with in-jokes, tracks like “Harvest Spoon” and “Greener Pastures” also tackle socio-political issues. If Free Kitten’s music doesn’t necessarily add up to the importance of any of its members’ main bands, Nice Ass remains an engaging snapshot of its era.
