No Past No Future (CD)
Spacemoth
Amoeba Review
Bay Area artist Spacemoth’s debut album No Past No Future will make fans of Broadcast and Stereolab perk up their ears. The project of vintage synth enthusiast Maryam Qudus, the tracks feature hazy space-pop melodies, post-punk percussion, and moody, languid vocals. The dreamy, lush vibe of the album is compounded by moments of unsettled instrumentation and lyrical explorations of faith in love and fear of change. Because this isn’t an easy-listening, atmospheric album; it’s Qudus’ grappling with climate change, societal turmoil, and her place in the world. That’s what makes No Past No Future so gripping; there’s an undercurrent of unrest and unease, but despite it all, there’s awe-inspiring beauty.
