O Monolith (CD)
Squid
Amoeba Review
O Monolith is the unpredictable, exciting, and experimental new album from London’s Squid. Opener “Swing (In a Dream)” is highly-charged and frenetic, channeling frothing anxiety into a beautiful, bold track with squealing horns and ferocious guitars. “Undergrowth” is woozy, disorienting, and in-your-face, a potent blend of krautrock, avant-garde, math rock, and future jazz. “The Blades” feels like a visit to a whole new planet, with robotic electronics, deceptively languid rhythms, and layered throw-the-kitchen-sink-at-‘em orchestration. O Monolith is one of those rare albums that pushes music into novel sonic directions, keeps the listener on the edge of their seat, and delivers a damn good time while doing it.
