Optimisme (CD)
Songhoy Blues
Amoeba Review
Malian rock band Songhoy Blues follow-up their acclaimed 2017 record with the excellent new album, Optimisme. Featured in the 2015 documentary about the struggles of Malian musicians, They Will Have to Kill Us First, the group continues to call for political change while seamlessly merging traditional elements with desert blues and rock n' roll. It's hard to sit still through the uplifting, energetic "Barre." "Bon Bon" is built on a satisfying but never monotonous groove, punctuated by melodic guitar solos. The funky, moody single "Worry" is also their first full track with English lyrics, to further spread their message to keep fighting.
