Out Of Sight (LP)
Jake Xerxes Fussell
Amoeba Review
08/10/2020
Now this is old time music. Guitarist and singer Jake Xerxes Fussell interprets traditional songs with the backing of a lively full band, bringing to life ballads on the subjects of heartbreak, booze, and work. Immediately arresting, these are finely-tuned compositions with a rich history, including songs originally sung by an Irish Traveller, a long-forgotten singer from an industrial school for women back in the day, and a ‘20s era composer and musicologist writing about life on the seas — to name just a few of the album’s fascinating inspirations. A stunning achievement that showcases the rich history of these compositions as well as the impressive talents of a modern day troubadour.
