Path Of The Clouds [Silver Vinyl] (LP)
Marissa Nadler
Amoeba Review
If ever there was an artist whose lyrical and melodic skills would shine through the creation of the now-standard “pandemic album,” it’s Marissa Nadler. Always skilled at creating miniature worlds within her songs, on Path of the Clouds, Nadler finds a new spin on her distinctive outlaw tales of lost love and forgotten dreams. Apparently, we have Nadler’s early pandemic obsession with Unsolved Mysteries to thank, as she explores infamous disappearances and escapes, and subverts the murder ballad structure into a new tale of survival. The melodies also head off into new directions, with Nadler’s skillful guitar playing emphasized by intriguing collaborations with harpist Mary Lattimore, multi-instrumentalist Milky Burgess (Mandy soundtrack), bassist Simon Raymonde (Cocteau Twins), Nadler’s piano teacher/woodwinds/keys Jesse Chandler (Mercury Rev), vocalist Amber Webber (Black Mountain), and guitarist Emma Ruth Rundle. Haunting, introspective, and thoroughly captivating.
