Population Ii (CD)
Randy Holden
Amoeba Review
Joanna Ricco 05/26/2010
For an album that is said to have never been officially released, Randy Holden’s Population II has become a thing of cult-defining legend for nearly 40 years. Often credited as having been recorded in 1969, the album has the feel of true psychedelia . . . but with Holden’s unparalleled way-ahead-of-his-time metal guitar work, it feels like something more in line with guitarists like Kawabata Makoto of Acid Mothers Temple. The brooding pace of Population II can be attributed to the only other musician to record on it—Chris Lockheed—who was playing drums and keyboard simultaneously throughout. A bootleggers delight, this is one of those shrouded in mystery albums that make metalheads marvel at the genre’s origins.
