Refuge (CD)
Devendra Banhart , Noah Georgeson
Amoeba Review
Refuge is a fitting name for this ambient, immersive release from Devendra Banhart and Noah Georgeson, an experimental LP that veers away from Banhart’s now-familiar freak-folk. The duo delve into ambient piano and experimental drone, building new, fantastical worlds out of soundscapes populated by Mary Lattimore’s harp and Jeremy Harris’ (Vetiver) synths. Pedal steel, brass, woodwinds, spoken word, and mantras all contribute to the atmosphere of beauty and wonder that Banhart and Georgeson conjure so well. It’s a meditative, rejuvenating listening experience. Refuge proves to be a much-needed record for our turbulent times.
