Rotten Bun For An Eggless Century (CD)
mui zyu
Amoeba Review
Fans of dreamy, pastel-hued songwriting with an undertone of darkness will dig mui zyu's debut, Rotten Bun for an Eggless Century. The London-based singer-songwriter's work lives in the zone where the seemingly sweet and light-hearted is actually anchored in the underworld, a juxtaposition she seems to relish. (And which listeners will, too.) Combining traditional Chinese instruments such as the guzheng and erhu with delicate piano and seductive percussion, this is some imaginative, intimate bedroom pop. Rotten Bun is a gorgeous album, filled with rich washes of sound, deep emotion, and a tantalizing glimpse into the powers of mui zyu.
