Serpentina [White Vinyl] (LP)
BANKS
Amoeba Review
BANKS’s fourth LP, Serpentina, is a dark, sinuous record, its fangs proudly bared. BANKS revels in alt-pop weirdness: her sonic flourishes never shy away from the avant-garde, her melodies always stay rooted in simple, pure emotion. The irresistible “Meteorite” is catchy-as-hell and energizing despite pulling listeners forward by the heart-strings. “Fuck Love” is (fittingly) seething and electric, digital and defiant. With its warped vocals, “Holding Back” possesses an irrepressible force of emotion that wavers between gentle nostalgia and keening pain while “I Still Love You” is a tender, enjoyably vulnerable ballad. *Serpentina *will keep you on your toes; the emotional detours and genre-crashes of these songs are filled with unexpected delights.
