On their thirteenth album, Set Sail, the North Mississippi Allstars send listeners on an evocative, rootsy journey into sound. The album showcases the bass talents of Jesse Williams, the voice of Lamar Williams, Jr., and the soul stylings of William Bell, in addition to the usual North Mississippi Allstars crew. The songs just drip with the atmosphere of summer in the South, with throwback R&B, gospel, country, and blues influences that, taken together, create an eclectic, intriguing musical tapestry. With undeniable grooves, richly-textured melodies, and deftly interwoven vocals, the band’s latest is one of their best yet.
