Signs Of Life (LP)
Neil Gaiman , FourPlay String Quartet
Amoeba Review
Neil Gaiman has an album? Often, it's an odd experience to see a beloved artist enter a new arena but in this case, it ultimately just makes so much sense. Australian quartet FourPlay pulls emotion out of their instruments in a way that only sweeping, searing strings can convey. Gaiman delivers spoken word poems and stories set to FourPlay's compositions and collaborative songs written by Gaiman and the quartet. When Gaiman backs up Lara Goodridge on "Bloody Sunrise," it's like a technicolor-hued golden age of Hollywood musical number...just like, sung by the undead. At other times, the songs are melancholy and strange, imaginative and transportive, like some fantastical combination of dark fairy tale and chamber music. Signs of Life may not be your happily ever after, but it certainly will make fans happy for the length of its delightful run time.
