Panda Bear's latest may have the unnerving name of Sinister Grift but its overwhelming vibe is warm and inviting. "Ferry Lady" is woozy and vaguely tropical, a swirling, sensational slice of experimental rock-pop. "Defense" is spacy and crunchy, a modern day throwback to driving, down-home '70s rock. Noah Lennox played pretty much every instrument himself, with guest appearances from Cindy Lee, Rivka Ravede (Spirit of the Beehive), and every member of Animal Collective (a first for a Panda Bear solo release). Sinister Grift is solid through and through, an unexpected, enticing voyage into a kaleidoscopic world.
