So Many Other Realities Exist Simultaneously is the latest old-school-inflected, insightful hip-hop album from Atmosphere. The titular realities are reflected in the album's intentional labyrinth of genres and moods. Slug and Ant open the album on a deceptively easy-going note with "Okay," a track that feels as comforting as an old friend, or a bedtime story to keep nightmares at bay. Alas, this is the real world, and tensions arise with the thrilling, short-but-sweet "Thanxiety" and keep moving through the uneasy reggae rhythms of "Holding My Breath." Things get haunting on the trip-hop-tinged "Sculpting With Fire," a track that finds catharsis in catastrophe. So Many Realities is exciting and unexpected, another step forward from an act that never stops innovating.
